In the following pictures, you can see that the message I sent with a Google Video link in it was dropped by Yahoo.

There Is A Better Way
Luckily, there are other options besides Yahoo Messenger for instant messaging.
GAIM is a free program which supports AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, and the open standard
Jabber. Jabber (also known as
XMPP) is an open
standard which is not controlled by any single company.
Google Talk also supports Jabber.
I plan on getting off Yahoo Messenger as fast as possible, and taking my friends with me. (Maybe I should also quit My Yahoo, Yahoo Finance, and Yahoo Mail, cleansing myself of these yahoos.)
The hard part about switching to a new instant messaging application is bringing your friends with you. If you are the only one to switch (and you're switching from a
proprietary service such as Y! Messenger), you'll be left with nobody to talk to.
The Migration Plan
To avoid being stuck with a
lame service again, we should all switch to an open protocol which isn't controlled by any single company. The following instant messaging programs work with Jabber:
I just downloaded
GAIM. This will allow me to talk to my existing buddies on Yahoo Messenger and AIM, while signing in on Jabber and urging my friends to join me. Creating an account on Jabber is
easy, just pick the username and password you'd like to use, and click the Register button the first time you log in. If that username is available you're set. If you are using GAIM, make sure you click the Remember Password option, just in case you make a typo. Happy Jabbing!
